Matt Petersen.
I built SYP because people deserve more than an exercise to repeat. They deserve to understand their body—and feel capable of working with it.
For more than 15 years, my work in fitness, stretching, recovery, bodywork, and corrective exercise has brought me back to that purpose.

The hours
between sessions.
Early in my career as a fitness coach, I saw clients working hard and following good exercise cues who still struggled outside the gym. Balance felt uncertain. Back or knee discomfort interrupted their day. The same restrictions kept returning.
Some had been told to stop activities they loved. Others had received repeated treatments but still wanted to understand what was happening in their bodies. I wanted to help them take a more informed, active role in their movement.
The hour we spent exercising was only a fraction of their life. What their bodies experienced during all the other hours mattered, too. That realization led me deeper into stretching, recovery, movement assessment, massage therapy, and corrective exercise.
A foundation built
through learning.
I am grateful for the teachers who changed how I understand the body—and how I work with people.
- Aaron Mattes
- Training under Aaron Mattes, creator of Active Isolated Stretching, profoundly influenced my development as a stretch practitioner.
- John Howard
- John Howard’s instruction and mentorship helped shape the practitioner I became. His influence remains part of my professional foundation.
- Laurie Craig
- At Georgia Massage School, I studied under Laurie Craig. She deepened my understanding of anatomy, muscular tissue, and hands-on work. Becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist opened the next chapter of my career.
More range was
only the beginning.
Hands-on stretching showed me how quickly someone could experience a change in movement. But creating more range did not finish the work. I wanted people to learn how to actively use it, build strength within it, and carry it into their daily lives.
That became a foundation of SYP: lengthen, strengthen, control, and reinforce. Assessment helps us choose where to begin. Corrective exercise and intentional practice connect mobility with control.
Different lives. Shared foundations.
My experience spans everyday clients, executives, entertainers, and people in professional football, baseball, and wrestling. Their goals and demands vary. Across ages, occupations, and activity levels, the same principle keeps returning: people benefit from understanding how their own body moves.
Explore the SYP MethodBecause your body
belongs to you.
You should understand it. You should know how to work with it. I want you to have tools to notice your range, recognize what you can control, and make thoughtful choices about your practice—with professional guidance when you need it.
Stretch Your Potential brings together more than 15 years of education, coaching, hands-on work, mistakes, discoveries, and refinement with real people. The book is Volume I—the beginning of putting that knowledge into your hands.
Your body is always adapting. You deserve to know how to guide it.
